Nationwide Looks to AWS, Multi-Cloud and DevOps to Power Digital Transformation

Amid a sector-wide transformation, Nationwide Building Society is undergoing a digital revamp aimed at transitioning digital banking and mortgage services to the cloud, alongside adopting DevOps principles. The firm has already created a core, cloud-based platform, which it will use to run all its customer-aimed products and services, according to the building society’s director of mobile and digital, James Smith, speaking for Computer weekly. Nationwide is still working on improving the quality of services delivered via the platform, by refining monitoring and self-healing processes. However, Smith describes the platform as a “live, resilient, robust, hardened” solution, currently in “scaled-pilot mode”. In practical terms, this means the firm is running its mortgage switcher and re-mortgaging services through the platform, as well as a couple of its banking and sales offerings too, says Smith. The building society runs its cloud operations on AWS, but has not ruled out adding other cloud providers to the mix. “We will be multi-cloud, and the exact flavours of public versus private cloud we will use, we’re still working on determining. It is about what is right for us, based on the workloads we want to run there, and the various idiosyncrasies of that particular workload,” he says.
