Containerisation Specialist Docker Files for New Funding Round

abstract1-1569400184

Containerisation software specialist Docker is raising additional funding, according to paperwork filed with the SEC. According to Crunchbase, it is unclear how much has been raised and how much the company intends to raise in this new round. The most recent filing, from October 15, states that Docker has raised over $91.9 million, contributed by 31 investors, out of a targeted $191.8 million. However, some details of the filing complicate the numbers, indicating that today’s filing is an amendment to an initial filing submitted on October 6, 2017, coinciding with news of the company targeting $75 million for a Series E round. The initial filing says the company had raised approximately $61.8 million out of $75 million it was hoping to raise in the round. The approximate size of the round, however, points to continuing investor interest in Docker. In its infancy, the company was one of the fastest-growing enterprise computing vendors, revolutionising the way companies build and deploy software. However, the emergence of Kubernetes as the de facto standard for managing the large number of containers that big application development operations require, threatened to stall adoption of Docker. With the latest investment, it’s likely that Docker will ramp up its sales and marketing staff to start generating the kind of revenue numbers it needs to go out for a public offering in 2019.
