Cybersecurity, in terms of systems development and quality assurance, involves identifying application vulnerabilities and defining security by design, often referred by the industry as application hardening.
On 4th December 2019, the India-heritage IT service behemoth Wipro announced a new cyber defence centre in Melbourne, Australia. This is the 15th new centre opened through this program, globally.
“The Cyber Defence Centre will enable customers to implement or expand their vulnerability management [capabilities],” according to Raja Ukil, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Cybersecurity and Risk Services for Wipro Limited.
This announcement by Wipro follows its recently released State of Cyber Security 2019, published in partnership Check Point Software, amongst others.
According to the authors of the report, security assessments are often reactive.
Though some 25% of firms have built these reviews into every release cycle, over 40% are reactive to compliance audits, or review biannually or less frequently.
Based on interviews with Chief Information Security Officers, security weaknesses arising from poorly engineered application programming interfaces are a key concern. By hardening these functional and data connectors, software leaders can reduce the risk of data breach and application vulnerability.
Ultimately, as cyber resiliency becomes a feature of regulatory stress testing, financial firms must evolve their secure application development and assurance practices.
