The use of AI in the development and testing process is becoming more commonplace, according to the findings of an annual survey conducted by GitLab, the software management platform.
According to this year’s report – just released – 65% of developers are saying that they use AI and machine learning practices in testing, or will be within the next three years, compared to 51% last year. Meanwhile 53% of respondents said they claimed to use bots in their testing process, up from 39% in 2022.
GitLab’s “Global DevSecOps Report” is based on more than 5,000 survey responses from developers across a range of industries and disciplines.
The report also found that use of DevOps and DevSecOps software methodologies are gaining popularity with 56% of respondents reporting their use in 2023 vs 47% in 2022. This trend was paired with a decrease in the use of all other surveyed methodologies, including agile/scrum, kanban and waterfall.
Overall, the developer toolkit is becoming more streamlined as companies consolidate the number of tools they use to develop and test software. Most respondents say they now use between two and five different development tools compared to 6 to 10, which was the most common response in 2022.
