Aggressive Digital Transformation Projects Expose Firms To Data Breaches, Says Research

data-1571045139

60% of firms have experienced a breach of sensitive corporate data, says the 2019 Thales data threat report. The report, based on a survey of 1,200 corporate executives in nine countries, also demonstrates that 30% of firms have experienced a data breach within the past year and that a large percentage of these incidents can be attributed to aggressive digital transformation projects with insufficient encryption of sensitive data. As organisations embrace new technologies, particularly multi-cloud environments, they struggle to implement proper data security, says the report. 97% of respondents to the survey reported that their organisation was already implementing some level of digital transformation, admitting that they are using and exposing sensitive data within these environments. Companies with aggressive transformation projects face the highest risk, the report indicates, with the data showing that only 30% of companies use encryption within these environments. However, the study also found there are a few key areas where encryption adoption and usage are above average, including the internet of things (IoT) (42%), containers (47%) and big data (45%).
